Residential and commercial stump grinding

Professional Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Get rid of the stump, not just the tree. We grind stumps below grade so you can mow, plant, build or simply use your yard again.

A tree may be gone, but the stump it leaves behind can be a problem for years. Stumps take up space, get in the way of mowing and landscaping, catch toes and lawn mower blades, and can sprout new growth from the roots. e Tree Service provides stump grinding for homes and commercial properties across the Triangle, whether the stump is from a tree we just removed or one that has been sitting in the yard for a decade.

Why Property Owners Remove Stumps

Appearance is a big part of it. A stump in the middle of a lawn or bed is a constant reminder of the tree that used to be there, and it rarely fits the look anyone wants for their yard.

Mowing and maintenance get harder around stumps. You have to steer around them, trim by hand and watch for surface roots that can damage mower blades.

Trip hazards matter in yards where children play, along walkways, and on commercial properties where visitors may not notice a low stump in the grass.

Landscaping, construction and future planting often require a clear area. A stump can be in the way of a new patio, fence, shed, addition, garden bed or replacement tree.

Reclaiming yard space is often the simplest reason. Once the stump is ground, the area can be seeded, sodded or mulched and put back to use.

Potential pest issues are worth mentioning as well. Decaying stumps can attract wood-boring insects and other pests. Removing the stump takes away that food source near your home.

How Stump Grinding Works

A stump grinder uses a heavy, rotating cutting wheel fitted with carbide teeth. The operator moves the wheel back and forth across the stump, chipping the wood away a little at a time until the stump is below the surrounding ground level. What is left is a mix of wood chips and soil where the stump used to be.

Several things affect how the job goes. Stump diameter is the most obvious: a wider stump takes longer to grind. The root flare, the part of the trunk that widens out into the roots at ground level, often adds significant width beyond what you see at the top of the stump. Access determines which grinder can reach the stump; tight gates, slopes, retaining walls and fences may call for a smaller machine. We also check for nearby hazards such as irrigation lines, buried cables, rocks and structures before we begin.

Grinding depth is typically several inches below grade, which is enough for grass, sod or mulch. If you plan to plant a new tree, pour a slab or build in that exact spot, tell us during the estimate so we can talk about grinding deeper where the site allows.

Surface roots that run out from the stump just under or above the soil can often be ground along with the stump when they are in the way of mowing or planting. We will discuss which roots to address before we start.

What Happens to the Wood Chips

Grinding creates a pile of chips and soil roughly where the stump stood, and a larger stump makes a surprisingly large pile. Many homeowners use the chips to fill the hole or spread them as mulch. Others prefer to have them removed so the area can be filled with topsoil and seeded. Let us know your preference during the estimate.

Looking for free mulch? Wood chips from our tree work are sometimes available for pickup at no charge. Availability changes with our workload, so call (919) 290-3020 to ask. Chips are pickup only; we do not deliver or spread them.

Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Stump grinding chips the stump away below grade and leaves the root system in the ground, where it gradually breaks down. It is faster, less disruptive and the right choice for most yards. When most homeowners ask for stump removal, what they want is the stump gone so they can mow, plant or build, and grinding does exactly that.

Full stump removal means digging out the stump and its main roots, which leaves a large hole and disturbs much more of the surrounding soil. It is typically only needed for specific construction situations. Our service is stump grinding. We do not promise complete root removal, and we will be clear with you about what grinding does and does not accomplish for your plans.

Residential and Commercial Stump Grinding

For homeowners, stump grinding often completes a tree removal or cleans up stumps left by a builder, a previous owner or an old storm. Many customers have us grind several stumps at once while the equipment is on site.

On commercial properties, stumps can be a liability along walkways and in landscaped areas, and they get in the way of new plantings and site improvements. We also grind stumps as part of land and lot clearing when the next phase of a project calls for it.

What Affects the Cost of Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding is priced mainly by the size of the stump, including the root flare, along with access, the number of stumps, the grinding depth needed and whether you want the chips hauled away. Hard-to-reach stumps and stumps surrounded by rocks or structures take longer. We give free estimates, and grinding can be priced together with a removal.

Stump Grinding in the Communities We Serve

Stumps turn up in every town we serve, but the reasons vary. In Apex and Holly Springs, many are builder-left stumps sitting in new lawns and along fence lines. Homeowners in Cary often want an old stump gone so a bed, patio or new tree can go in, and in Raleigh large oak stumps with wide root flares near driveways and walks are a regular request. In Durham, we grind stumps in fenced in-town yards and along wooded property lines.

On sloped Chapel Hill lots, grinding clears walkways and planting areas without the soil disturbance of digging a stump out, and on larger Pittsboro properties owners often have a group of stumps ground in one visit to open up lawn, paths or pasture. We grind stumps in every community on our service areas list.

Stump Grinding and Stump Removal Near You

In Wake Forest and Youngsville, stumps from earlier removals and lot clearing are common in lawns and along wooded edges. In Morrisville, small, fenced yards often call for a compact grinder that fits through a gate. In Knightdale and Clayton, builder-left stumps in new lawns are a frequent request. If your stump is left from a tree that came down in a storm, grinding can be added to storm damage cleanup, and for a tree that is still threatening your home, start with our emergency tree service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stump grinding included with tree removal?

It can be. Some customers want the stump ground right away and others prefer to leave it. Let us know during the estimate and we will include it in the price if you want it done.

How deep do you grind stumps?

Typical grinding goes several inches below the surrounding grade, which is enough to mow over and lay sod or seed. If you plan to plant or build in that spot, tell us during the estimate so we can talk about grinding deeper where the site allows.

What happens to the wood chips from stump grinding?

Grinding produces a pile of chips and soil. Many customers use the chips as mulch or to fill the hole. If you want them hauled away instead, let us know during the estimate.

Does stump grinding remove the roots?

Grinding removes the stump and the root flare below grade. It does not pull out the full root system, which breaks down over time underground. Large surface roots near the stump can often be ground as well, and we will discuss that before starting.

Do utilities need to be marked before stump grinding?

Because grinding goes below ground, public utility lines should be located through NC 811, the free statewide locating service, before work begins. NC 811 does not mark private lines such as irrigation, landscape lighting, invisible pet fences or lines to a detached building, so tell us about any of those.
